A gutsy catch by short-leg fieldsman Steve Cazulino proved the eventual undoing of South Australia against Tasmania in Hobart on Friday.
Cazulino scrambled to clutch the ball to his body after Redbacks keeper Adam Crosthwaite (22) flicked a Xavier Doherty delivery to the leg-side, reducing the visitors to 8-197 shortly after the tea break.
The Tigers secured outright victory with further wickets to Doherty and James Faulkner, dismissing the Redbacks for 219 and moving to fourth on the Bupa Sheffield Shield ladder.
Crosthwaite initially stood his ground, perhaps in disbelief, then trudged off Blundstone Arena along with any chance the visitors had of hanging on for a draw in the final session of an entertaining clash.
The victory was set up on the third day when Ed Cowan and George Bailey both posted centuries to push the Tigers ahead by 401 runs after their second innings.
The South Australian run-chase started well enough with Daniel Harris (50) and Michael Klinger (43) adding 88 without loss before three wickets fell in quick succession prior to lunch on day four.
From there, though, the Redbacks were unable to build a meaningful partnership and the Tigers were the only side with any chance of victory after the first hour’s play.
Doherty finished with the impressive figures of 4-27 from his 15 overs. James Faulkner (3-42) and Luke Butterworth (2-26) were the other multiple wicket takers for the home side.
Suffering a hamstring complaint, Butterworth left the field during one of two rain breaks in the second session and did not return for the afternoon. Tigers’ skipper George Bailey was also rested for the day having pulled up sore after his innings on Thursday.
Only the arrival of light rain looked likely to save the Redbacks in the final session, but it held off long enough for the Tigers to claim victory with 19 overs to spare.
