Hurricanes cruise in Hobart

21 December 2011 | by James Willoughby

The Hobart Hurricanes made it two wins from two in the KFC T20 Big Bash League after a 42-run win over the Sydney Sixers on Wednesday.

Hobart scored an impressive 3-169 at Blundstone Arena with Phil Jaques (73) and Travis Birt (65) adding 107 runs for the second wicket.

And early wickets had Sydney behind the eight-ball, with cameos from Nic Maddinson (33) and Steven Smith (28) not enough as they finished at 9-127 from their 20 overs.

Needing 170 for victory, Peter Nevill (3) and Michael Lumb (3) needed to get the visitors off to a good start.

But Ben Hilfenhaus (1-33) - who was buoyed by his selection in the 13-man squad for the Boxing Day Test - had other ideas and after five dot balls removed Nevill's off stump with the final delivery of the second over.

Lumb was clean bowled by Jason Krejza (2-20) off the very next ball and despite some brief resistance from Maddinson and Smith, Sydney never looked likely.

Maddinson smashed four fours in one Hilfenhaus over but a brilliant Ben Laughlin catch in the outfield saw Smith's innings come to an end.

From then on, the Sixers collapsed as Krejza trapped Maddinson in front and a sharp Laughlin (1-21) bouncer was too quick for Dwayne Bravo who picked out Owais Shah at mid-wicket.

Pakistani Rana Naved-ul-Hasan (4-22) then ripped through the lower order, with Moises Henriques (22), Dominic Thornely (4), Brett Lee (8) and Josh Hazlewood (2) all falling victim to the wily seamer in the final stages.

Earlier, Jaques and Jonathan Wells (17) gave Hobart a slow but steady start.

The former was lucky to survive an appeal for caught behind but after the opening pair negotiated two hostile overs from Brett Lee (0-19), they got to work and scored 37 from the six-over batting powerplay.

Wells was bowled at the end of that period after he danced down the wicket to Thornely (1-13), but that brought Birt to the crease and after some initial consolidation, he started to hit big.

He firstly shattered the window of the Clarence Cricket Club after walloping Stuart MacGill (0-17) for a massive six before Bravo (0-23) was taken for 20 in the next over as Birt found his range.

He was the aggressor, hitting the ball long and hard while Jaques was more delicate, placing his shots through the offside to impressive effect.

Henriques (0-29) went for 13 and 16 in successive overs but Birt's 41-ball stay at the crease – which included four fours and three sixes - was finally ended when his attempted ramp shot ended in the gloves of wicketkeeper Nevill.

Mitchell Starc (2-35) was the man who finally made the breakthrough and he also dismissed Jaques with the opener departing in the final over after he skied a catch to Henriques at mid-off.

Englishman Shah (8 no) chipped in with some late runs which pushed the Hurricanes towards 170, a score which proved too much in the end.
