Stars clinch Rose Bowl

29 January 2012 | by Steve Orme, Sportal

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have retained the Rose Bowl Series Trophy with a crushing nine-wicket victory over the New Zealand White Ferns at Blacktown International Sportspark on Sunday.

Jodie Fields' side claimed the best-of-three series 1-0 after the opening two matches were washed out on Wednesday and Friday.

The White Ferns won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions but were bundled out for a modest 125 in 40 overs.

Player of the series Julie Hunter (3-31) set the tone with a superb opening spell while fellow quick Ellyse Perry (3-16) was the other standout performer with the ball for the home side.

In reply the Southern Stars rocketed to 1-126 off just 16.4 overs, with Leah Poulton (61 off 53) and Alex Blackwell (50 off 40) producing an unbeaten 104-run partnership to steer the hosts home in style.

"We've been talking about trying to play the perfect game and I feel like we did that today," a delighted Fields said after the match.

"Our bowling was outstanding and we followed it up with an outstanding batting effort so you can't ask for more than that."

Hunter added after picking up player of the series honours: "I think it could have gone to anyone today really. I mean all the girls bowled really well and it was a great batting effort by Alex and Leah to back it up so it was a good all-round team performance and I guess I was just lucky to take it home."

The home side suffered an early setback when Rachael Haynes was well caught by Lucy Doolan at first slip off Lea Tahuhu (1-30) for eight.

But Poulton and Blackwell kept the scoreboard ticking over with a barrage of boundaries as the hosts raced past 50 in just the eighth over.

The onslaught continued as Poulton brought up the century - and her own half-century - with a glorious cover drive in the 15th over.

Blackwell hit the winning runs to reach 50 off the final ball of the contest to complete a resounding victory.

Earlier, the White Ferns made a disastrous start when Hunter had Lucy Doolan caught behind for a duck with the fifth ball of the day.

The wickets continued to tumble as the tourists slumped to 4-39 in the 13th over.

Frances Mackay (seven) and Amy Satterthwaite (19) were both trapped lbw by Hunter, while Sarah Coyte (1-25) chipped in with the wicket of Suzie Bates who was caught by Ellyse Perry at point for seven.

Perry chimed in with a wicket of her own soon after, removing Sara McGlashan lbw for nine to leave the visitors in an even deeper hole.

Elizabeth Perry showed some resistance before mistiming an attempted sweep off Lisa Sthalekar (1-24) to Jess Cameron who took the simplest of catches at short fine leg.

Top-scorer Katie Perkins (33 off 71) broke the shackles with a boundary off Jess Jonassen (1-23), but the young spinner answered by removing Katey Martin for two, brilliantly caught by Alex Blackwell at mid on.

Perkins' stubborn resistance ended meekly when she top edged to Sthalekar off Erin Osborne (1-2) before Perry bowled Morna Neilsen for one with the first ball of the 40th over to end the innings.

The two sides will resume battle in Game 4 of the T20 INTL series at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday.
