Fury too strong for Roar

UPDATED 13 February, 2013 11:57AM AEST | by Omnisport

The Western Fury were comfortable 43-run winners against the Tasmanian Roar in a women's Twenty20 match at the WACA on Friday.

Set a target of 131 to win, Tasmania made a bright start through openers Emma Thompson (28) and Tayla Kafoa (20).

But both departed in quick succession and the Roar lost their way, eventually restricted to 6-87 from their 20 overs.

Thompson and Kafoa added 52 runs for the first wicket before New Zealander Suzie Bates (1-5 off two overs) claimed the crucial wicket of Thompson.

Kafoa was run out by Renee Chappell (3-17 off four) shortly after, before the latter turned destroyer with the ball.

She removed Erin Burns (four), Linsey Da Costa (three) and Veronica Pyke (zero) in a devastating spell that delighted the home fans.

Corinne Hall (12 not out) and Lauren Hepburn (nine not out) were unbeaten at the close of the innings but Tasmania fell well short of their required victory target.

Earlier, Bates smashed 57 from 47 deliveries including seven fours to guide the Fury to 7-130.

Nicole Bolton (17), Chloe Piparo and Chappell (14 each) chipped in with the bat as the hosts posted a score that was always likely to challenge their opponents.

Anita Silva (3-28 off four) and Da Costa (2-33 off four) impressed with the ball for the losers.
