Fire too strong for Fury

UPDATED 13 February, 2013 11:57AM AEST | by Omnisport

Jodie Fields starred with an unbeaten 54 off 44 deliveries as Queensland Fire accounted for Western Fury by 36 runs in the Women's Twenty20 on Sunday.

Fields was supported by Jess Jonassen (39 off 39 balls) and Beth Mooney (38 off 25 not out), who guided Queensland to 2-141 from 20 overs at Floreat Park Oval in Perth.

Fury made a strong start in reply through openers Nicole Bolton (23 off 35) and Jenny Wallace (29 off 34), but eventually fell short of the target at 6-105 from their 20 overs.

Earlier, Fury captain Bolton won the toss and sent in Queensland, who made just 179 from 50 overs in Saturday's Women's National Cricket League clash at the WACA.

Opener Melissa Bulow (five off 13) was dismissed in the fourth over, before Jonassen and Fields swung the momentum in the opposite direction.

Jonassen was trapped lbw in the 13th over, paving the way for Fields and Mooney to combine for an explosive 73-run partnership.

Sarah Fragomeni (1-23 from three overs) and Gemma Triscari (1-30 from four) claimed one wicket each, while Emma Biss was left to rue costly figures of 0-25 from her three overs.

Bolton and Wallace guided Fury to 0-53 at the midway point of the innings, though the hosts were soon under pressure at 4-99.

Heather Graham attempted to rescue the chase with 25 from 27 balls, but her efforts proved too late as Fury ran out of overs.

Jonassen (1-13 from three), Jude Coleman (1-17 from four), Jemma Barsby (1-19 from four) and Kirsten Pike (1-21 from four) took one wicket apiece.
