Shooting Stars clash washed out

UPDATED 28 November, 2012 10:55AM AEST | by Luke Sheehan, Omnisport

Australia and New Zealand's second women's one-day international was eventually called off due to rain, cutting short the Shooting Stars' chase of the Kiwi total.

The match was originally cut to a 37-over-a-side affair at the Blacktown International Sportspark in Sydney, in which New Zealand compiled 6-161 after being sent in to bat.

Rain halted play in the Shooting Stars' chase, before the match was finally called off with the home nation at 3-84 through 18.2 overs, 10 balls short of enabling a Duckworth-Lewis method result.

The no result means Australia hold onto their 1-0 advantage in the four-match series.

Earlier, opening bat for NZ Natalie Dodd scored a half-century off 66 balls to anchor her side's innings.

Anna Peterson provided a quickfire 32 off 26 balls to help New Zealand surpass the 150 mark.

Leg spinner Renee Chappell was the only multiple wicket-taker for the Stars, nabbing figures of 2-30 from seven overs – including the prized scalp of Dodd.

The Shooting Stars got off to a poor start in their chase, losing both openers in the space of five balls, with Nicole Bolton (five) out caught behind off the bowling of Lea Tahuhu, before Elyse Villani (10) was out stumped off the bowling of Morna Nielsen.

The hosts would lose one more wicket, before an unbeaten 48-run partnership between Beth Mooney (17) and Sarah Coyte (37) steadied the ship when heavy rain ended proceedings.
