Berry joins umpire review discussion

UPDATED 12 February, 2013 2:31PM AEST | by Ben Cameron, Omnisport

South Australia coach Darren Berry has joined Queensland coach Darren Lehmann in questioning the Ryobi Cup's use of the third umpire decision review system.

Berry stormed into the Western Australian change room's midway through the Redbacks' innings on Saturday to consult with counterpart Justin Langer about the system.

The two most notable reviews of the day came when Kane Richardson was given not out on a review when the ball appeared to strike his glove and Marcus North was recalled after being adjudged LBW off the bowling of Johan Botha.

But Berry said his main concern with the system was a lack of understanding as to who controlled it.

"We are all very confused by it," he said.

"If you're looking for a quote the best quote of all is the quote that George Bailey, the Australian T20 captain, gave (on Wednesday) after the Queensland-Tasmania game.

"You dig that out, but find the quote the Australia Twenty20 captain said about the domestic DRS system and use that quote as opposed to mine.

"Clearly I was talking to Langer about the confusion of it and coaches, players, umpires alike we're all pretty confused and frustrated by this system, which was clearly evident on several occasions tonight."

After Tasmania's narrow loss to Queensland on Wednesday, Bailey said he felt the player-based system used at international level worked best.

"Why wouldn't you, if it's good enough for international cricket?" Bailey said.

"I think it confuses the players, I think it confuses the umpires. I think you end up reversing decisions (when) what it is put in place for is the really bad decisions.

"I think leave it in the hands of the players. You get two (reviews) and if you use them with bad reviews, then so be it.

"It's hard because I can't sit here and say there's a definitive way we can have it better, but I don't like the way it is at the moment."

Lehmann also showed his displeasure of the system when he brandished a cricket rule book to the camera during the same match.

When pressed further about the system, Berry said: "I'm confused. I'm confused. I'm confused."
