Meteors eclipse Roar in Burnie

UPDATED 24 November, 2012 5:08PM AEST |

The ACT Meteors have cruised to a 54-run victory over the Tasmanian Roar in their WNCL clash at West Park Oval in Burnie on Saturday.

Half centuries to Sara Hungerford (66), Asha Smith (60) and Rhiannon Dick (60) enabled the Meteors to post a highly competitive 8-277 from their 50 overs and the Roar were never a winning chance in reply.

They lost Emma Thompson (11) and Belinda Page (16) early in their run chase and completed their innings well short at 8-223.

Laura Wright (23) and Smith got the Meteors off to a good start and when Hungerford strode to the crease at 1-55 the visitors were already well on top.

Smith and Hungerford put on 104 for the second wicket and Dick got in on the act late in the innings with a stunning knock that included six fours and two towering sixes.

Katelyn Fryett was the pick of the Roar bowlers with 3-53, but team-mates Veronica Pyke (1-68) and Brooke Hepburn (0-47) couldn't keep the run rate down.

The Roar needed to score at nearly a run a ball to chase down the score, but their task seemed near impossible when Dick struck to get rid of Thompson with the score on 29.

Page followed shortly after and some tight bowling for the remainder of the innings from Samantha Bates (1-35) and Sally Moylan (2-40) ensured the Meteors held on for the victory.
