Spirit cruise to big win

UPDATED 04 January, 2013 3:16PM AEST | by Omnisport

Victoria Spirit continued their strong form in the Women's Twenty20 with a seven-wicket win over Queensland Fire on Sunday.

The Fire could only manage an average 9-119 from their 20 overs after electing to bat first at the Gabba.

That total was never going to be enough and Meg Lanning (unbeaten 56 off 43) and Kelly Applebee (39 not out) guided the visitors to victory.

Queensland's top-order were unable to deal with the off-spin of Molly Strano, who claimed their top four batters in her haul of 4-15.

Strano took the wickets of Jess Jonassen (one), Grace Harris (0), Melissa Bulow (15) and Beth Mooney (nine) to reduce the Fire to 4-33.

Delissa Kimmince (21) and Kirby Short (unbeaten 20) top scored for the Fire as they struggled after the top order collapsed.

Elyse Villani (two) fell early for Victoria and when Jess Cameron departed for 16 and Emma Inglis for one, the Fire had hope with the score at 3-55.

But with Lanning dominating – the opener hit six fours in her innings – and Applebee providing support, the Spirit cruised to victory with 19 balls to spare.
