Vic Spirit seal third place

Vic Spirit sealed third place in the Women's National Cricket League on Saturday, cruising to a five-wicket victory over Western Fury in Blacktown.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Fury collapsed after a great start to limp to 9-207 from their 50 overs.

In reply, a brilliant 94 from opener Meg Lanning helped the Spirit overhaul the target in the 41st over for the loss of five wickets.

The Fury made a terrific start to their knock, with openers Jenny Wallace (23) and Nicole Bolton (33) putting on 71 for the first wicket, aided by some wayward bowling from Kath Hempenstall, with the seamer tossing up 11 wides.

But when Molly Strano claimed both openers in consecutive overs, the Western Australians started to toil.

Suzie Bates was a shining light for the Fury, adding 63 from 67 balls, but she struggled to find a partner to help, with Nicky Shaw's 22 the best any of her team-mates could add.

Strano was the pick of the Victorian bowlers, claiming 3-43 from her 10 overs, Emily McIntyre took 2-35 while Hempenstall, Briana Binch and Julie Hunter took one apiece.

In reply, the Spirit were on the back foot early when Elyse Villani was bowled by off-spinner Emma King in the fourth over, but Lanning and Jess Cameron (32) put on 84 for the second wicket to have the run rate firmly under control.

Lanning cracked 14 fours in her brilliant knock, and although she finally fell in the 33rd over after getting the faintest of touches on a Bates ball before being caught by wicketkeeper Wallace down the leg side, she had put her stamp firmly on the contest.

By that stage the damage had been done, and 44 from skipper Kelly Applebee guided the Spirit home.
