England clinch ODI series

UPDATED 23 February, 2013 7:33PM AEST | by Omnisport

England have won their one-day international series over New Zealand 2-1, with a five-wicket triumph in Auckland on Saturday.

A brilliant team effort from the tourists with the ball set the match up for Alastair Cook's men at Eden Park, as they bowled out NZ for 185 in the 44th over.

England were never in serious doubt of chasing down the meagre total - and they reached 5-186 in the 38th over.

But earlier, Steven Finn (3-27) and Stuart Broad (2-38) did a large part of the damage for England, while spinner Graeme Swann also picked up multiple scalps.

Finn had both openers back in the pavilion inside eight overs, as he dismissed BJ Watling (one) and Hamish Rutherford (two) either side of Jimmy Anderson's removal of Kane Williamson for seven to have the home side reeling at 3-11.

Some steadying knocks from Ross Taylor (28) and Grant Elliott (24) attempted to salvage some pride, but they were dismissed in successive Broad overs - with the latter run out by the former.

The mix-up brought Brendon McCullum to the crease, and as he has done often previously, he salvaged New Zealand's innings with a 68-ball 79 that included six fours and five sixes.

McCullum was the last to depart, but he had little support from the tail, with the last five producing just 33 between them.

Much like their bowling attack, it was an even performance from the English batsmen.

Captain Cook made a composed 46 off 67, while fellow opener Ian Bell made a quickfire 24 off 22.

Jonathan Trott (38), Eoin Morgan (39) and Joe Root (28 not out) all chipped in to see the tourists claim their first ODI series win in New Zealand since 1992.
