India wrap up first Test

UPDATED 28 February, 2013 10:40AM AEST | by Omnisport

India have wrapped up an eight-wicket win in the first Test against Australia with Sachin Tendulkar leading the hosts to victory in Chennai.

Australia survived just nine overs on the morning of the final day at MA Chidambaram Stadium before their second innings was brought to a close for 241.

Chasing 50 for victory, India had a slight wobble as Murali Vijay (six) and Virender Sehwag (19) were dismissed but with Tendulkar smashing consecutive sixes off his first two balls, the hosts won comfortably to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Resuming at 9-232, Australia's hopes of even holding on for a draw were slim but Moises Henriques and Nathan Lyon looked ready for the challenge as they blocked out the first two overs.

But with the final delivery of Tuesday's ninth over, Australia's innings was over when Ravindra Jadeja got the ball to bounce a bit more and take the edge of Lyon's bat and Vijay took the catch at short leg.

Lyon was out for 11, while Henriques was stranded on 81 not out in an impressive debut Test for the 26-year-old all-rounder after he scored 68 in the first innings.

Having taken Lyon's wicket, Jadeja finished with 3-72 in the second innings, while Ravichandran Ashwin was Australia's nemisis, claiming 5-95 to finish with 12 scalps for the match.

India did not seem keen to plod towards victory as Vijay hit Lyon for six in just the second over but when the 28-year-old Indian opener was caught by Henriques off James Pattinson's bowling in the third over, Australia dared to dream.

By the time Sehwag was out in the 10th over, however, India were already within 14 runs of victory and Tendulkar's two sixes off Lyon ended any Australian hopes of an Indian collapse, before Cheteshwar Pujara scored the winnings runs in the 12th over.

Tendulkar finished on 13 not out and Pujara was unbeaten on eight, while for the visitors, James Pattinson (1-13 off three overs) and Lyon (1-29 off 5.3) were the only wicket-takers in the second innings.

India captain MS Dhoni was named man-of-the-match for his double century in the first innings.
