Quiney leads Vics to big win

UPDATED 19 February, 2013 3:42PM AEST | by Omnisport

A blistering century from Rob Quiney has helped the Bushrangers defeat the England Lions by eight wickets in their one-day tour clash on Wednesday.

In one of Quiney's best batting displays since being dropped from the Australian side following the second Test against South Africa, the Victorian opener belted 122 off 104 deliveries as the Bushrangers easily chased down the England Lions' tally of 8-225.

Quiney looked in superb touch as he belted16 fours and three sixes during his knock, while he received able assistance from Peter Handscombe (67 not out off 85) and Chris Rogers (23) as Victoria passed their target in the 37th over, finishing on 2-227.

In the first of three matches between the sides at the Junction Oval, Bushrangers captain Cameron White won the toss and sent the Lions in to bat on a hot morning.

The English side made a good start as James Vince (43) and Varun Chopra (19) took the total to 68 without loss.

But the game changed complexion when Scott Boland was introduced to the attack to replace John Hasting for the 16th over, the right-arm medium bowler crashing through the gate as he bowled Chopra with his first delivery, before repeating the dose as he took out James Taylor's (0) stumps two balls later.

In his next over, Boland had Ben Foakes (0) caught behind for the last of his three wickets before Pakistan-born spinner Fawad Ahmad (2-30) stepped up to dismiss Vince and Ben Stokes (0) in quick succession as the Lions lost five wickets for just six runs.

Gary Ballance (86) and Rikki Clarke (25) steadied the ship as they posted a 70-run sixth-wicket stand, helping the tourists eventually finish on 8-225 off their 50 overs.

However, their score looked in no danger as Quiney took to the Lions attack, helping the Victorians claim the first of these tour matches in a canter.
