Profile

Victoria has bolstered its all-round stocks with the astute purchase of Dan Christian from the South Australia Redbacks.

In what can be seen as a virtual straight swap for Andrew McDonald, the Bushrangers will be hoping the 30 year old can recapture the form that made him an international star in 2012.

After starting his domestic career in NSW, Christian made the bold move to move to Adelaide for the 2007/08 season.

His first few years in red were highlighted by big hitting in the final overs, as well as tight bowling at the death. His subtle variations with the ball also helped him take a stack of wickets, especially in the shorter forms of the game.

2010-12 was a prolific period for Christian, who featured heavily in both the ODI side and the national t20 team.

Interestingly, Christian only managed 12 runs in the smash and grab arena from his 11 appearances. Granted, he only batted four times, but it seems surprising that a lusty hitter was used so sparingly.

His bowling was more promising; with seven of his ten career wickets coming against the West Indies.

Although he has never reached any great heights in first-class cricket, Christian was called into the Test squad to face New Zealand in 2010/11. However he wasn’t included in the final XI.

2012 saw him play 17 ODI’s for Australia. He started his 50 over career with a number of starts against India and Sri Lanka, but failed to convert them into big scores.

It was with the ball that he had most success, including a hat-trick against Sri Lanka at the MCG.

However, since then, Christian’s form has petered a little. The greatest example of this is his price in the IPL. In 2011, he was bought for $900,000, while two years later, he went for just $100,000.

Discipline cost him his spot in the South Australian side for a number of matches last season, so Victoria will be hoping he can keep his passion in check.

A stint for Gloucester in the County competition in England could be the ideal preparation for a player who is more than capable of returning to the form that made him an international star.
