Sarwan in doubt
25 November, 2009
West Indian batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan is in doubt for the first Test against Australia starting on Thursday at the Gabba after suffering a back injury at training.
The left-hander, who was one of the tourists' best in their drawn tour match against Queensland last weekend at Allan Border Field with scores of 73 and 66, went down hurt during training at the same venue on Wednesday morning.
Sarwan remained on the ground for several minutes before having to be assisted from the field by team physiotherapist CJ Clark and the West Indies camp was reluctant to comment before he is fully assessed.
The West Indies can ill-afford to lose Sarwan from its top order especially with skipper Chris Gayle only just back in Australia on Wednesday morning after rushing home to the bedside of his ill mother in a Jamaican hospital last week.
Gayle will play in the first Test but is likely to be suffering from the effects of jet lag, putting extra importance on the contributions that will be needed from the likes of No.3 Sarwan and No.4 Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
