Brett Lee on life and cricket
I think cricket, and sport in general has always played an important role socially and culturally in Australia. Our climate enables us to play all year round. Sport is encouraged and played from an early age and throughout school years. If you enjoy sport it generally translates into adult life, either participating or watching. It develops trust, openness and respect and it brings people together. Whatever their backgrounds, beliefs or origins, people unite under the common language of sport. Australians love to compete against the rest of the world and we love to win.
As a cricket player, having interests outside of my sport of choice has always been a great way of relaxing, off the field. As difficult as it is when you are on tour, it’s important to keep some balance in your life.
On tour, I always take my guitar. After a game it’s fun to sit around with the boys, play a few songs and have a good sing-along. I think that music unites people. It brings joy and laughter and it’s a wonderful way to let go of any stress. For me, it's a great way to take my mind off the day’s play.
When I'm home in Sydney, I often put on my suit and work the shop floor at Claude Sebastian’s in Sydney, selling suits, shirts and accessories. I’ve worked in the fashion industry since I was 18, and have launched the Brett Lee range of clothing. I love to be involved in the design and the selection of fabrics for each collection.
I’d love to travel and see more of Australia as well, so it’s great that TopOrder is giving me the opportunity to talk about Australia and beyond. This year I was invited by Tourism Australia to come on board as a Friends of Australia ambassador to share my passion for Australia and the places that inspire me. I look forward to sharing my Australian story, encouraging people to explore our beautiful country and all it has to offer.
TopOrder also gives me the chance to report on and off the field. I’m looking forward to the season ahead and the Vodafone Test Series. I’ll also play in the KFC T20 Big Bash League for the Sydney Sixers and will share some of the great stories that happen on tour. However, there is life after cricket, so I'd love to write about my experiences on the road this Summer, whether it’s travel, fashion or food and wine.

Shannon Bennett on passion
Many people are familiar with my love for great food, but cricket is another passion of mine. From a spectator’s perspective it’s all about watching a great competitive game of skill and passion, and from a player’s perspective it is about getting stuck in and giving it your all.
Growing up, I played cricket throughout high school for the First XI. I also trained with the Melbourne Cricket Club where I was lucky enough to have the late Clive Fairbairn as my mentor. Clive was an iconic character in the club’s history, playing in more than 200 games with the MCC between 1937 and 1957.
I think cricket is one of Australia’s favourite summer sporting attractions, it has really integrated itself into our culture. Sport in general is part of our way of life, its one of the greatest facets of our culture.
I’ve always found innovation to be a vital part of my career success. I always need to be at the forefront of my profession and create new and exciting dishes that push culinary boundaries. When I was approached by TopOrder Magazine, I was excited at the opportunity to be involved with a unique publication that enabled me to explore my passion for combining food, sport and wellbeing.
