Queensland claim Under-19 National Championship

21 January 2012 | by 1

Queensland has taken out the Cricket Australia Under-19 National Championship for the first time since 2000-01. They capped off a dominant tournament in which they lost only one match and had three players named in the Team of the Championship.

Reigning title holders Victoria, who finished third on the table with five wins, claimed the Spirit of Cricket award.

South Australia’s Travis Head was named the Player of the Championship following consistent performances across all formats of the game. Head also claimed the leading run-scorer title, finishing the tournament with a total of 442 runs, more than 100 runs clear of his nearest competitor. He notched two centuries, two half-centuries and finished with an average of 55.25.

The Northern Territory’s Matthew Hanna was named the leading wicket-taker of the Championship, finishing with a total of 22 wickets at an average of 10.82.

Queensland wicket-keeper James Peirson finished the tournament with the most dismissals by a fielder, having taken 14 catches behind the wicket, as well as one assisted run out and one stumping.
