Race for Under-18s title heats up

23 January 2012 | by

New South Wales scored an all-important two bonus points in their six-wicket win over Tasmania in their Round 5 T20 encounter.

Tasmania got off to a solid start at the crease with an opening partnership of 58, led predominantly by Paris Crowe (33). New South Wales gave away 24 extras, which helped Tasmania to their total of 8-88 off their 20 overs. Opening bowler Stefanie Daffara (3-6) was the standout for New South Wales, finishing with incredible figures, while Ashley James (2-16) also returned tidy figures.

New South Wales were not too troubled as they chased down Tasmania’s total, gaining themselves two bonus points in the process. Katie Mack (29 not out) and Nicola Carey (22) helped New South Wales reach their total of 4-89 in the 10th over. The Tasmanian bowlers struggled against the fierce New South Wales batting line-up, with Kelsie Minty (1-14) finishing the best of the bunch.

Queensland scored a thrilling one-run win over Victoria in their Round 5 T20 encounter.

After being sent in to bat Queensland posted a fairly modest total, by their standards, with only three players reaching double figures. Beth Mooney (18) and Lauren Hume (18 not out) posted the best scores for Queensland, helping their side to a total of 9-91 off their 20 overs. Victorian pace bowler Julia Crockett-Grills (4-17) returned incredible figures, while Alana King (2-16) also chipped in.

Victoria made a positive start to their innings, not losing their first wicket until they’d reached 48 runs. Victoria struggled to keep up with the required run rate and a middle-order collapse saw them lose on the last ball of the innings, falling one run short. Victoria’s openers Kate Dempsey (24) and Teagan Parker (22) were integral in guiding their side to a total of 8-90 off 20 overs. Casey Ryan (2-8) was the stand-out bowler for Queensland and she was well supported by Haidee Birkett (1-14).

The ACT scored an impressive five-wicket win over Western Australia.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Western Australia were able to string together consecutive partnerships that saw them post a defendable total of 6-106 off their 20 overs. Teneale Peschel (31) was instrumental in Western Australia’s innings and she was backed-up by teammate Chloe Piparo (24). The ACT’s Zoe Cooke (2-22) continued her great form of the Championship, while Emily Aberline (1-5) was also impressive.

The ACT chased down Western Australia’s total within 15 overs to claim an all-important bonus point. Cooke (26) and Jenny Taffs (23) were the standouts for the ACT as they reached 5-110 after 5 overs. Peschel (2-21) capped off her strong showing in the game and Beth Winbush (1-1) also chipped in.

South Australia had the bye for the morning T20 game and will face Queensland in the afternoon Round 6 match.
