New South Wales wrapped up the Under-18 National Championship with a convincing 165-run win over Victoria in the main final of the tournament.
After being sent in to bat New South Wales posted a respectable total of 9-244 from their 50 overs, with middle order batters Nicole Carey (30) and Naomi Stalenberg (32) the key to the innings. Anna O’Donnell (4-34) was the clear standout among the Victorian bowlers, with Alana King (2-60) also chiming in for a few wickets.
Victoria struggled to get their innings going after falling to 4-6 early. New South Wales ultimately cruised to victory and claimed the Betty Butcher Shield after dismissing Victoria all out for 59 in the 31st over. Rebekah Morris (21) was the only Victorian to have an impact at the crease, while New South Wales bowlers Ashley James (3-8) and Emma Newman (2-5) were responsible for much of the damage.
Queensland, who narrowly missed out on a place in the main final, scored a 32-run win over the ACT to finish third on the overall points table.
After winning the toss and electing to bat Queensland dropped three early wickets and collapsed to 3-14. Queensland’s strong middle order were able to string some partnerships together to set up a total that would be hard for the ACT to chase down. Haidee Birkett (61 not out) and Lauren Hume (35) were integral in guiding their side to a total of 9-201 off their 50 overs. The ACT’s Melissa Norup finished off her great Championship campaign taking 3-28, while ACT captain Emily Aberline (3-32) also returned great figures.
The ACT made a decent start to their innings before a middle order collapse of 4-15 put victory beyond their reach. Norup (50) finished off her impressive day, while Mikaela Turik (23) was handy at the top of the order, with the ACT all out for 169 in the 48th over. Queensland’s Jemma Barsby proved her versatility taking 6-31, while holly Ferling (3-17) also returned tidy figures.
Western Australia scored a 12-run victory over South Australia to claim fifth spot at the Under-18 National Championships.
After losing an early wicket, Western Australia managed to string together a couple of partnerships but were unable to post a total that would seemingly be competitive when they were bowled out for 135 in the 46th over. Heather Graham (24) and Megan Banting (26) were the only Western Australian batters who managed to find some touch at the crease. Alex Price (3-17) added to her wicket tally, which eventually saw her claim the leading wicket-taker mantle for the tournament.
Western Australia had 25 minutes to bowl at South Australia before the lunch break and managed to claim two crucial wickets in two balls. A middle order collapse saw South Australia struggle to reach Western Australia’s total and they were eventually bowled out for 123 in the 42nd over. Tahila McGrath (26) and Katelyn Pope (20) were the best of the batters, while Taneale Peschel (3-25) and Kayla Vanspall (2-8) helped restrict South Australia’s run chase.
Tasmania sat out the penultimate day’s play after missing out on a place in the finals.
