Steyn joins Kallis in stands

UPDATED 12 February, 2013 3:57PM AEST | by Christian Mammone at Adelaide Oval, Omnisport 6

South Africa speedster Dale Steyn has become the second Proteas bowler after Jacques Kallis to leave the field of play with an injury on the opening day of the second Vodafone Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval.

Steyn looked to have injured his left hamstring and stopped bowling in his 15th over before leaving the ground for treatment.

The lightning quick has figures of 0-50 from 14.2 overs to his name.

Steyn's injury comes after Kallis was forced off with a suspected right hamstring injury earlier in the day.

Kallis pulled up while running in to bowl and could not complete his fourth over before he was subbed.

The Proteas all-rounder snared two wickets in the opening session for figures of 2-19.

The 37-year-old dismissed Australian opener Ed Cowan for 10 before claiming the prized scalp of Ricky Ponting (four) after bowling the former Test captain with a brilliant delivery.

The departures of Kallis and Steyn heap further pressure on South Africa's already depleted bowling attack after they lost paceman Vernon Philander just prior to the start of play with a back injury.
