Spirit down Fire in nail-biter

UPDATED 13 February, 2013 11:57AM AEST | by Omnisport

The Vic Spirit have notched their fourth win of the WNCL T20 season with a thrilling five-run victory over the Queensland Fire at Allan Border Field on Friday.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Spirit posted 4-151 from their 20 overs with opener Meg Lanning top scoring (40).

The Fire looked on track for victory midway through their run chase but Emily McIntyre bowled brilliantly at the death to help restrict the hosts to 6-146.

While McIntyre was expensive in conceding 28 runs from her three overs, she picked up three crucial wickets to lead her side to victory.

Jodie Fields thumped seven boundaries in her unbeaten 53, but lacked support as the Fire lost five wickets in their last six overs.

Opener Melissa Bulow had laid the platform for the run chase with a well-made 44 off just 43 balls as she and Fields combined for a 90-run stand that looked to have put the hosts in the box seat.

Earlier, Lanning helped the Spirit off to a good start, but it was the big-hitting of Kelly Applebee that ultimately proved the difference.

Applebee crunched seven boundaries as she made 38 off just 23 balls, while Emma Inglis (32) was also a solid contributor after Elyse Villani (13) and Jess Cameron (eight) both failed with the bat.

Jess Jonassen was the best of the bowlers with 2-12 off her four overs, while Sammy-Jo Johnson picked up 1-11.
