Sri Lanka have posted their first victory of the Commonwealth Bank Series with a crushing eight-wicket bonus-point win over Australia in the rain-affected one-day international at the SCG.
Chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised 152 runs for victory off 41 overs after Australia were bundled out for 158 off 40.5 overs, Sri Lanka cruised to 2-152 with a whopping 101 balls to spare.
Skipper Mahela Jayawardene led from the front with a classy 61 off 67 deliveries while Tillakaratne Dilshan (45 off 41) also made a solid contribution at the top of the order in front of 22,365 fans.
The tourists burst out of the blocks as Dilshan and Jayawardene produced a rapid 74-run opening stand.
Dilshan was particularly destructive, hitting Mitchell Starc (0-32) for a six over backward square in the third over before reeling off three straight boundaries from Brett Lee's (1-42) next over.
Clint McKay (1-23) made the opening breakthrough when Dilshan edged to David Hussey who took a sharp chance at first slip.
Kumar Sangakkara announced his arrival at the crease with a glorious straight drive off Lee before bringing up his 10,000th ODI run with a single soon after.
His brisk 30 off 28 came to an end when he skied the ball to Xavier Doherty at mid-on, leaving Dinesh Chandimal (six) and Jayawardene to finish the job.
The win lifts Sri Lanka to seven competition points, two adrift of Australia and three back from competition leaders India after four tri-series matches.
Earlier, a David Hussey half-century rescued Australia from total disaster after stand-in skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat in sunny conditions.
Hussey, who was dropped on eight and 33 by the tourists, hit 58 off 64 deliveries to drag the hosts to a semi-respectable total after arriving at the crease with his side in deep trouble at 4-60.
Farveez Maharoof (2-18) and Thisara Perera (2-29) were the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, while spearhead Lasith Malinga (1-42) troubled all batsmen throughout the innings.
Ponting had no hesitation opting to bat in sunny conditions, but the hosts were quickly on the back foot as the clouds rolled in and the wickets began to tumble.

The dangerous left-hander advanced down the wicket and looked to turn the ball on the leg side but spooned a simple catch to Maharoof at mid-on.
Ponting's (two), Matthew Wade (15), Mike Hussey (13), Peter Forrest (16) and Dan Christian (six) also fell cheaply before light rain forced the players from the field at 4.12pm local time with the visitors well on top.
Runs were hard to come by when Australia resumed at 6-88.
McKay (three) and Lee (zero) both fell cheaply before Starc (17 off 24) added a valuable 39 runs for the ninth wicket with David Hussey.
