Imparja Cup Day 1

06 February 2012 | by

Southern states dominate up north on Day 1 of Imparja Cup

Reigning champions New South Wales re-asserted themselves on Day 1 of the Imparja Cup 2012 with two clinical victories and a spirited Victorian side registered two opening-day wins in a promising start to the tournament.

An Imparja Cup reunion awaited NSW on Day 1; their first opponent, Western Australia, the last team they met during their all-conquering 2011 campaign.

Keen to improve on their runners-up status of 2011, WA pressed NSW early before NSW captain Jeff Cook propped up the middle-order with 77 off 59, including half a dozen sixes.

The WA batting line-up was then overcome by the bowling of Black Caps representative Tyrone Thomas who claimed 5 for 7 from three overs.

New Victorian captain Ben Abbatangelo guided his youthful side to its opening victories, top scoring in both matches.

Abbatengelo, who plays grade cricket for Northcote in Victoria and represented Victoria at under-19 level earlier this season, made 43 off 35 deliveries against South Australia topped his earlier effort with 81 off 46 against Northern Territory.
