Australian cricket joins bushfire relief efforts

UPDATED 07 February, 2013 3:01PM AEST | by Cricket Australia

Cricket Australia, the Commonwealth Bank, the Nine Network and Cricket Tasmania will unite to stage the Commonwealth Bank Series Bushfire Appeal 2013 at the Commonwealth Bank One Day International in Hobart on Wednesday.

The appeal will raise funds for Red Cross Disaster Relief and Recovery.

Red Cross is currently providing assistance to people affected by bushfires in Tasmania, NSW, Victoria and the Northern Territory.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland said the appeal will support those affected by the bushfires and continue Australian cricket’s tradition of supporting the community.

“Like most Australians, we’ve seen the devastation caused by bushfires and we want to do what we can to support those affected,” Mr Sutherland said.

“Unfortunately natural disasters such as the bushfires often occur in summer and Australian cricket has a record of responding in these times, as it will again on this occasion.

“The Australian community provides our game fantastic support and the appeal gives Australian cricket the opportunity to give back.”

Thanks to the Commonwealth Bank and Cricket Tasmania, 500 tickets to the match and food vouchers have been provided to the Tasmanian Department for Emergency Services for emergency service representatives.

“It has been devastating to see the impacts of the fires on the local communities in Tasmania but we are extremely grateful for all of the efforts of everyone who has worked tirelessly to contain the fires,” Michelle Winzer, Commonwealth Bank Regional General Manager Service and Sales Branch Victoria & Tasmania Region, said.

“We are honoured to be able to offer many of the local fire fighters, volunteers and bushfire relief workers the chance to have a ‘day out’ at the cricket on Wednesday at the Commonwealth Bank Series match against Sri Lanka at Blundstone Arena.

“Our staff have worked alongside these wonderful people implementing emergency relief packages to help get Tasmanians back on their feet as quickly as possible and the Commonwealth Bank just wanted to say thanks for the incredible efforts.”

The Australian squad will sign and donate their shirts after the match to be auctioned, with proceeds going towards the appeal. Members of the public can donate to the appeal at match or via the appeal website:

The Commonwealth Bank Series Bushfire Appeal 2013 complements the work being undertaken by state and KFC T20 BBL teams to support bushfire relief efforts.

The appeal is a feature of Cricket Cares, Cricket Australia’s community action program.
