Having waited so long for his chance to replace Adam Gilchrist behind the stumps, Brad Haddin was never going to slip quietly into the background when replaced as ‘keeper after the 2011-12 home series against India.
Not only was the the veteran, by then aged 35, drafted back in to add stability to Australia’s middle-order, he was installed as vice-captain to further confirm the value placed on his experience and combativeness. A fierce competitor, he would doubtless concede that his 2013 Ashes batting return was not his most flattering with just one score in excess of 50.
However, he did set a new benchmark for the number of catches accepted by a wicketkeeper in an Ashes series (29) which confirms his principal role within the Test team remains undiminished even though it was way back in 2001 when he made his international debut in Australian colours.
