Tasmania tear through WA

UPDATED 22 February, 2013 9:43AM AEST | by Gareth Morgan at the WACA, Omnisport 3

Another impressive display from their much-vaunted seam attack has placed Tasmania in a commanding position on day one of their Bupa Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia at the WACA.

Eye-catching performances from rookie bowling duo Ryan Duffield (3-61) and Ashton Agar (3-47) had helped the Warriors to dismiss the visitors for a below-par total of 211.

But the Tigers roared back in the final session, with Ben Hilfenhaus (2-21) and Luke Butterworth (2-14) leading the way, as they reduced the hosts to 6-54 at stumps.

Making his first appearance of the season, left-arm paceman Duffield bowled superbly for the hosts throughout his 17-over spell, accounting for both openers Mark Cosgrove (one) and Ben Dunk (four) and then snaring the prized wicket of visitors skipper George Bailey (18) shortly after lunch.

Spinner Agar, meanwhile, showed no signs of fatigue following his recent training stint with the Australia Test side in India, varying his length, flight and pace to tear through the Tigers' middle order and take his wicket tally to 14 from just five first-class innings.

Sent in to bat by the hosts, Tasmania may have been heartened to see the heavy cloud cover lift almost as soon as their innings began, but their relief was short-lived as Cosgrove was sent packing by Duffield in the seventh over.

Four overs later Dunk was also on his way and although Alex Doolan (33) and Ricky Ponting (28) managed to dig in and move the score past 50, the former played on just before lunch to hand Burt Cockley (2-47) the wicket his tireless efforts deserved.

Doolan's departure brought Bailey out to the middle to join the in-form Ponting, but the dangerous pair were swiftly separated when the former Test skipper wafted at a rising delivery from Michael Hogan (2-54) to provide Sam Whiteman with a regulation catch behind the stumps.

The following over saw Duffield account for Bailey and while Jon Wells (16) and James Faulkner (28) hung around long enough to add 38 runs for the sixth wicket, neither looked especially comfortable and both were dismissed in quick succession when Agar returned for his second spell.

Butterworth then managed only seven before misjudging another beautifully-flighted delivery from Agar to gift the simplest of bat-pad catches to Marcus Harris.

And although Jason Krejza's bold approach enabled him to top score with 36, Hogan trapped the former Test spinner lbw before he could do serious damage and the dogged late resistance of last-wicket pair Adam Maher (14 not out) and Hilfenhaus (23) was ended shortly after tea by the hard-working Cockley.

With the cloud cover returning and Hilfenhaus and the in-form Butterworth opening the attack, the Tigers always looked likely to make early inroads into the Warriors' fragile top order and did exactly that when Butterworth trapped Liam Davis (five) in front to claim his 31st Shield wicket of the season.

Harris (seven) didn't last much longer, his ill-advised slash off Hilfenhaus arrowing its way straight to Cosgrove at second slip, and when John Rogers (28) and Luke Towers (two) were dismissed in the space of four deliveries, the hosts were reeling at 4-28.

The Tigers skittled the Warriors for a first-innings total of just 67 during November's clash in Hobart and after key men Mike Hussey (three) and Mitch Marsh (10) fell to consecutive balls shortly before stumps, a repeat of that humiliation started to look all but inevitable for the home side.
