Profile

Meg Lanning might just be the best female cricketer in Australia at the moment. Still only 21, the aggressive batsman is already a regular in most record books.

After debuting as a 16 year old in 2008, Lanning took a while to assert herself as a genuine star.

However, in the 2010/11 WT20 Cup Final, Lanning proved just how good she was with a tournament clinching 74 off 62 deliveries.

On the back of her maiden WNCL century in 2011, Lanning went on to win the WT20 Player of the Year Award, as well as pretty much every other trophy at the VicSpirit’s end of year function.

Her first international opportunity came in T20 cricket. After a steady couple of years, Lanning burst into life in March 2012, becoming the first player to hit five consecutive 30+ scores.

The brutal returns continued with scores of 76 and 64 against New Zealand, as well as 60 and 32 against England earlier in 2013.

Lanning showed her class with 48 and 36 in the one-off Test earlier this year, but it has been her ODI form that has everyone talking.

In just her second match, Lanning smashed an unbeaten 104 to lead Australia to a nine wicket win over England.

Another century, this time 128 against India, was soon followed by one of the most dominant series ever produced by a female cricketer.

After hitting 87 and 72 in the first two matches, Lanning broke every record imaginable against the hapless Kiwis in game three.

Lanning took just 23 deliveries to reach her half-century, and needed just 22 more to reach triple-figures. Her 103 included 18 boundaries and three sixes, and broke the record for fastest century by an Australian cricketer.

Lanning has since hit her fourth ODI ton, and finished the English tour with 56 and 64.

Her average of 43.87 is one of the best in world cricket.

Lanning also boasts a number of other records, including highest score in a WNCL match – 175 off just 142 deliveries – and also the highest score in a Victorian Women’s Cricket Association match – 241 off just 136 balls.

Still only 21, Lanning is destined to become one of the greatest Australian cricketers to play the game.
