Passionate cricketer Eliza Bartlett has reached the halfway mark on her walk from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise money for Type 1 diabetes research.
The 21-year old nursing student began her inspirational journey at Adelaide Oval on 8 April and aims to walk nine hours a day to make it to the MCG by 27 April. Bartlett is well on her way to reaching her goal of raising $20,000 to assist the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in their mission to cure Type 1 diabetes.
Bartlett was diagnosed with the condition at the age of nine, but refuses to let it stop her from doing the things she loves. She is an avid cricketer, at age 15 she debuted in the SACA Women’s A Grade competition for the Sturt District Cricket Club. Eliza also represented South Australia in numerous pathway programs as a junior alongside Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars representative Megan Schutt.
Her decision to undertake the challenging walk was born from the simple desire to do “something big” to help raise money for the JDRF. Bartlett told Adelaide’s Sunday Mail, “I just woke up one morning last year and said to Mum, 'I think I’m going to walk to Melbourne’.”
Bartlett has provided progress updates on her Twitter account, @ElizaBart, where she has gained support from the likes of Australian ODI player Kane Richardson and former AFL star Shane Crawford.
Despite the challenges she has faced along the way, her determination to finish what she started is well and truly evident. On 13 April she tweeted, ‘This will certainly be the biggest challenge of my life. Nothing will stop me making it, including this severe pain’.
