A County Practice 28/6

UPDATED 22 September, 2013 6:21PM AEDT | by Andrew Groves

Australia fought back with the bat on day two of their tour game with Somerset, meanwhile England's T20 match with New Zealand was washed out.

Somerset 320 v Australia 4-266 (Watson 90, Clarke 45, Hughes 44no, Haddin 38no) on Day two at Taunton

Us

Shane Watson fell ten runs short of a hundred as Australia closed in on Somerset's first innings score at Taunton.

Ed Cowan (3) was out in the first over of the day and Usman Khawaja (27) fell cheaply as the home side searched for early wickets.

But a combination of Watson, Michael Clarke (45), Phil Hughes (44no) and Brad Haddin (38no) batted the tourists up to 4-266 at the close, 54 runs behind Somerset on a rain-hit day.

Watson hit 20 boundaries in his 94-ball innings, and looked on course to bring up his hundred before lunch, only to get a leading edge off Jamie Overton.

Clarke got off the mark with a beautiful square cut off Peter Trego for the first of his seven boundaries. Both Hughes and Haddin will be looking to kick on when play resumes tomorrow.

Them

England have announced Somerset opener Nick Compton will play for Worcestershire in their match against Australia next week.

Compton had been left out of England's warm up game against Essex with Joe Root promoted to the opening spot.

However, the selectors will also be keeping an eye on the right-hander who hit 81 against Australia yesterday.

England 1-2 v New Zealand no result in the second T20 match at The Oval

Them

England lost Michael Lumb (2) to the second ball of the match, but rain then wiped out the rest of contest handing New Zealand a 1-0 series win.

James Tredwell, who was made captain in place of the injured Eoin Morgan, knew his side simply had to win the contest.

However, the match ended in a damp squib. Mitchell McClenaghan the wicket taker for The Black Caps.
