Australian U19 squad announced

UPDATED 22 September, 2013 6:21PM AEDT | by Cricket Australia 3

Cricket Australia’s (CA) Youth Selection Panel (YSP) has today announced a 14-player Australian Under-19 squad to compete in the U19 International Series in Darwin, beginning 30 June.

Australia will compete against India and New Zealand in the series, in preparation for next February’s ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Dubai, as well as a friendly game against Papua New Guinea.

Australian U19 squad

Matthew Short (Vic)

Damien Mortimer (NSW)

Tom Leaver (WA)

Ben McDermott (QLD)

Sean Willis (TAS)

Alex Gregory (SA)

Jake Doran (NSW)

Riley Ayre (NSW)

Matthew Kelly (WA)

Josh Dunning (WA)

Matthew Fotia (VIC)

Jeremy Maher (NSW)

Gabe Bell (TAS)

Cameron Valente (SA)

The 14-player squad is a selection of Australia’s young, emerging talent, including Ben McDermott, son of former Australian fast-bowler Craig, and 2013 U19 National Championship leading wicket-taker Cameron Valente.

CA National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said: “We are pleased with the balance and talent of this squad as we look ahead to next year’s Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup in Dubai. This series allows us to continue to develop our best emerging players, while also giving our Youth Selection Panel a number of options leading into the Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup.

“Darwin, as host of this year’s Under-19 International Series, will present a great opportunity for our cricketers to test themselves in conditions similar to what they will experience next year in Dubai.

“This squad contains a number of players from our recent successful Under-19 tour to New Zealand, including tournament top-scorers Matthew Short and Sean Willis. In particular, we have focused on a number of promising young fast bowlers, with a mind on building and developing our fast bowling stocks.

“This series continues our philosophy of our Under-19 program as a journey, not a destination, to higher honours. From our last two Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup squads, we’ve already seen cricketers like Mitchell Marsh, Pat Cummins, Ashton Agar and Josh Hazlewood selected for national and state duties,” Chappell said.

The squad will be coached by CA High Performance Coach Stuart Law, who was also the Australian U19 coach during the 2012 ICC U19 Cricket World Cup.

The U19 International Series will be held in Darwin from Sunday 30 June until Friday 12 July as shown below*.

The next ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup will be held next year in Dubai in February.
