Australian team doctor Dr Peter Brukner OAM says over the past 50 years, a long line of young Australian fast bowlers have broken down, from Dennis Lillee and Bruce Reid to the present group in an article written for The Age newspaper.
Most Australian cricket fans are pretty excited about our fast bowling prospects, with James Pattinson, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood all showing great promise at domestic and international level.
So it is all the more disappointing that Pattinson and Cummins have returned home early from tours of England and South Africa respectively with stress fractures of the lower back that will keep them out of the game for some time.
Why are these young bowlers getting injured? Why can't we prevent these injuries and get them bowling against England?
