"Don't look back in anger"

England's off spinner is having a ball. A difficult first touring experience under Duncan Fletcher in 1999 as a youngster could have scarred him for life, but instead he returned in 2008 to become England's most successful spinner since Derek Underwood. At 34 he is no spring chicken, but with 248 Test wickets to his name he should have enough in the tank to take the 50 wickets he needs to go past Underwood and become England's greatest of all time, especially with the number of left handers around at the moment.

It would be some achievement for a bowler who cons people into thinking he is just a joke-teller. Yes, he is funny and yes, he brings an air of lightness to any dressing room he is in, but he has one of the sharpest cricket brains in world cricket and he is usually one step ahead of the batsman. Swann loves his job and loves cricket but there are two things he would rather be doing than bowling out Australia Down Under this winter. One would be banging in the goals at the Gallowgate end for his beloved Newcastle United, the other would be touring the world as the frontman for an Oasis/Primal Scream/Stone Roses supergroup. He once begged a team-mate to swap seats with him on a plane so that he could have a chat with Noel Gallagher. It made his year.
