Australia must look to future with youth

The English retention of the Ashes has caused many people have come out with their new radical plans to fix Australian cricket. The best way for Australia to recover from their cricket slump is to look to the future.

The Australian team must look to blood new players if it is to reduce the length of the rebuilding phase.

Australia have to look into players like Nic Maddinson, Jordan Silk, Joe Burns and Chris Lynn. Cricket Australia has to invest in the future. They have to try and create a group of players that work well together and can build cricketing relationships that will last for years to come.

Silk and Maddinson should be opening the batting for Australia A. The selectors should be bold and get Maddinson to open the batting with Rogers.

The best thing for a young player coming through the ranks is for him to be partnered with someone who has great experience at first class level in a range of conditions.

Clarke has to bat at number 4 supporting the youth that is around him. Tim Paine should be behind the stumps. His keeping is not a step up from Matthew Wade and  Brad Haddin, it’s a leap with a jetpack on. Having Paine behind the stumps will support any young spinner trying to find their feet at the Test level.

The bowling attack is the one area where the selectors have got it correct. This is helped by the abundance of talent at Sheffield Shield level. James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Jack Bird, Trent Coulter-Nile, Pat Cummins, Chadd Sayers, Gurinder Sandhu, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner just to name a few.

Siddle gives great experience to this group of young bowlers and is key to Australia producing a great fast bowling armoury for the future.

The Australian selectors need to be bold and blood young players if this cricket rot is to stop.

My team for the return Ashes would be:

Australia is missing a quality spinner, so the last bowler in my side would be Cummins.

I would have selected Ryan Harris, but by the time the next Ashes rolls around he could break down and that might be the end of his cricketing career.
