Profile

Mitchell Starc is a product of the endless fast bowling assembly line coming out of NSW. A talented wicketkeeper/batsman at high school, Starc made himself known when he picked up seven wickets in his first grade debut for Western Suburbs.

A solid season for the Blues was then interrupted by a nagging side-strain issue that kept him out of cricket for almost a year.

The tall left-arm quick made his Test debut in 2011 against New Zealand at the Gabba, picking up the crucial wickets of Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder.

Starc was a member of the Sydney Sixers’ side that won the inaugural KFC T20 Big Bash League. His 13 wickets made him the third leading wicket taker for the tournament.

His stocks continued to soar in South Africa, where he helped the Sixers claim the CLT20 title. Starc was superb, picking up 14 wickets at an average of 12.35. His in-swinging yorkers were impossible to play at the death, earning him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award.

His aggressive line and length in limited-overs cricket make him a threat with the new or old ball.

After destroying India in 2011, Starc swung the ball brilliantly against South Africa to clean bowl Peterson and Kallis, before toiling hard in the second innings to take career best figures of 6/154. This included the prized scalps of Smith, Kallis and de Villiers. He also added 68* off just 43 deliveries.

Ten wickets in two Tests against Sri Lanka were backed up with a lean series against India, although the lanky left-hander did steal the headlines with a headlining 99 in Mohali.

Despite missing out on the match at Lord’s, Starc has started the Ashes tour with eight wickets and a swashbuckling 66*, and troubled all batsmen during the trip.
