Top 10 Moments of WBBL|02

Fans were treated to another action-packed Rebel Women’s Big Bash League season that included 56 matches, an amazing total of 12,181 runs, 515 wickets, 155 sixes and 1218 fours – and a whole lot of highlights.  We reflect on the Top 10 moments of WBBL|02 in no particular order. 

Harmanpreet Kaur’s six over cover

India allrounder Harmanpreet Kaur set the tournament alight with her breathtaking blow over cover for a six on the opening weekend of the tournament at North Sydney Oval.   Undoubtedly it was the most talked about shot by the commentators throughout the season and the sheer quality of it even brought a smile to the bowler’s face.  

Bridget Patterson’s direct hit from the deep

There were plenty of brilliant run outs inflicted during WBBL|02 but nothing tops Bridget Patterson’s direct hit from more than 60 meters at North Sydney. Fielding at deep square leg, Patterson picked up the ball on the run before firing an accurate throw that hit the bottom of middle stump.

Sophie Devine’s century 

It was the most destructive and decorative innings of the tournament.  Sophie Devine put on an exhibition of power hitting as she smashed an incredible eight sixes and 10 fours in her unbeaten innings of 103. Incredibly, 88 out of her 103 runs were scored in boundaries and she also scored 71 per cent of the Strikers’ total.

Haydee Birkett’s screamer 

Brisbane Heat’s Haidee Birkett took what we decided was the catch of WBBL|02. Fielding at deep backward square, Birkett ran in at full pace, dived forward and held on to a brilliant catch.

Alex Blackwell’s withdrawn appeal 

Amongst all the action there was also a display of sporting etiquette from Alex Blackwell.  The Thunder skipper inadvertently collided with Sara McGlashan as she attempted to get back to her crease. Quickly realising she had unfairly impeded her opponent, Blackwell withdrew her appeal. 

Amy Sattherwaite’s hat-trick 

Satterthwaite earned herself a special place in WBBL|02 when she claimed the first hat-trick this season and in the process went on to claim the best figures (4-0-17-5) of the tournament.

Lea Tahuhu’s peach to remove Lanning 

It takes special delivery to dismiss a well-set Meg Lanning and Lea Tahuhu produced a 'jaffa' to knock over the tournament’s leading run scorer. Tahuhu pushed Lanning back with a couple of short balls before pitching one up that held its line to clip the top of off stump.

Alyssa Healy’s look-away flick

We are accustomed to Alyssa Healy featuring on the highlights reel but her no-look run out is worth watching again and again.  The Sixers' wicketkeeper caught an errant throw from the outfield over her head and back flipped it on to the stumps, finding Holly Ferling short of her crease.

The Super Overs 

There were three thrilling Super Overs during WBBL|02 but the one that tops the list was the one between the Thunder and Sixers at the SCG.  The scores remained tied even after the Super Over and it took a countback for boundaries to decide the winner. 

Stars home in a thriller courtesy of a free hit 

12 off two? No biggie for Stars batter Jess Cameron, benefiting from an Amy Satterthwaite no-ball on what should have been the final delivery of the match.
