Former Aussie quick Vakarewa returns to NSW

Fast bowler Belinda Vakarewa has decided to leave defending WNCL champions Tasmania and return home to NSW without a contract

Former Australia quick Belinda Vakarewa will move back to NSW after making the call to leave Tasmania and go uncontracted for 2022-23.

Vakarewa on Tuesday did not appear on any state's contract list, after taking personal leave from the game at the end of last summer.

The right-arm quick has played just the one ODI for Australia, debuting during the 2017 World Cup in the UK, but has long been among Australian squads and considered an option when available.

That was the case most recently on last year's tour of New Zealand, before making herself unavailable for Australian selection during the 2021-22 summer.

It's believed she was offered a contract by WNCL champions Tasmania but opted not to take it up.

Instead, she has decided to move home to Sydney where she grew up and is expected to train with NSW from outside of their contract list and be available for selection.

Extraordinary! Voll bowled, but survives after no appeal

There is also every chance she will return to a Sydney franchise in the Women's Big Bash League, with the Weber WBBL contract embargo window lifted on Tuesday morning.

It's also likely she will play a number of WNCL matches for NSW, with the state regularly calling from outside their contract list for the 50-over competition due to Australian players being unavailable.

Vakarewa crossed to Tasmania ahead of the 2019-20 summer, collecting 21 wickets in 17 matches for the Tigers.

Vakarewa was among a number of big moves on Tuesday as NSW, South Australia and Tasmania announced their WNCL contract lists for 2022-23, with former New Zealand wicketkeeper Rachel Priest also dropping out of the Tigers' squad.

It was announced on Monday that former Australia seamer Holly Ferling had also shifted from Queensland to ACT, after last playing international cricket in 2016, while Madeline Penna, a powerful right-handed batter and emerging leg-spinner, has switched from ACT Meteors to the SA Scorpions.
