Aussies plot path to Twenty20 glory

Aaron Finch says Australia have the team to win the World T20 for the first time

Aaron Finch senses player burnout could be a key challenge to manage if Australia are to finally break through and win the Twenty20 World Cup.

Finch will miss Australia's T20 clash with England on Monday as he recovers from a broken foot, one of seven T20 matches the team will play before India host the World T20 in March next year.

They have a three-game series against India at home in January then travel to South Africa for a three-match series in March.

While domestic T20 leagues such as the KFC T20 Big Bash League continue to thrive, there is less room in the international schedule for the shortest form of the game.

That suits Finch just fine.

Australia's T20 captain said he was already wary about how much cricket the likes of David Warner and Mitchell Starc – who play across all three formats - will be playing over the summer.

"For those guys playing all three formats it's probably unreasonable to expect them to play the home stuff, a Test series in New Zealand then go straight to South Africa," Finch.

"Guys need to be mentally fresh. It's just as important as being in good nick.

"I know the selection staff are on the same page with that."

While some players are unlikely to play much of the BBL due to their international commitments, Finch is unconcerned they will be short of T20 match practice when the tournament kicks off.

"If they're missing BBL to play international cricket that's not an issue," the Victorian said.

"Guys can change formats pretty quickly and easily.

"All of us are used to turning up in India and playing the IPL a few days later.

"If some players are turning up a week before the tournament, for mine that wouldn't be an issue."

There have been five editions of the T20 World Cup with Australia's best finish being a loss in the 2010 final to England.

"We've never won it and we'd desperately like to win," national chairman of selectors Rod Marsh said during the Ashes.

"We've got to get that sorted. That's going to be really tough, to win that in India."

Finch is of the same mindset.

However, the Mumbai opener pointed to the IPL as a source of confidence his squad could draw on.

"Subcontinent conditions will make it tough but I do think we've got the team to do it," Finch said.

"We've got a lot of guys who have a lot of experience playing there.

"For some of us it's almost our second home, guys spend two months there travelling around the country."

The Victorian has endured a frustrating stretch since lifting the ODI World Cup at homeground the MCG, suffering a torn hamstring, bruised lung and broken foot.

The chance to make history - by succeeding where predecessors Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke and George Bailey did not - is the carrot he's been eyeing from the sidelines.

"With Rod Marsh, the selection panel and coach we've started mapping out how best to plan and prepare and make sure we've got the best 15 guys available," Finch said.

"That's started and it is exciting, personally the chance to lead Australia in a major tournament would be amazing and it is the one trophy that has eluded us."
