Finch seeing red in Surrey

Aussie ODI batsman keen to make the most of rare four-day opportunity in England

Aaron Finch will reignite his on-off relationship with red-ball cricket in England's County Championship today when he makes his debut for struggling Division One side Surrey.

Australia's one-day opener continues to harbour hopes of earning a maiden Baggy Green, but finding opportunities to push his claims in the longer form of the game have been few and far between for the Victorian in recent years.

Finch's last four-day game for Victoria was last December, one of just four Sheffield Shield appearances he made for the Bushrangers in 2015-16, with international limited-overs duties and a hamstring injury keeping him away from the red-ball game.

"I love four-day cricket," Finch, who arrived in London just days ago after helping Australia win the ODI tri-series in the Caribbean, told Surrey Cricket Club's website.

"I haven't played for quite a while, since last December, because I've had a lot of while ball going on.

"It's a great game to play and a great club.

"(When I signed) obviously I wanted the chance to play all formats. It was very important to make sure I could play four-day cricket.

"Hopefully I can push my name up there from a four-day point of view and get a bit of credit for being able to play the longer form, not just the shorter forms."

Finch will also be reunited with Michael Di Venuto, after the former Australia batting coach resigned his post in February to take up the role of head coach at The Oval.

Di Venuto's tenure has gotten off to a rough start – Surrey have found life difficult after being promoted to the top flight this year and have one win from eight matches in the County Championship to sit second bottom on the table.

They also have just the one victory to date in the One-Day Cup, while they've won four of eight games to date in England's T20 Blast tournament.

Finch played for Jason Gillespie's champion Yorkshire team during the 2014 and 2015 County seasons, but he said he was looking forward to the challenge of helping turn the South London team's fortunes around.

"I worked with Di Venuto for a long time for Australia.

"I've done some great work with him and by all reports the Surrey boys are rapt with him so far.

Quick single: Cricket for 2014 Olympics if Rome hosts

"They haven't been able to reward him with many wins so far in the Championship, but that'll come.

"The way he coaches and the style he brings to the team, I think it can only go onwards and upwards. He's a fantastic guy and a great coach as well."

Finch is also looking forward to taking on a mentoring role with the young Surrey team.

"It's a great bunch of guys, guys who are young team and willing to learn. That's all you can ask from a group."
