Finch released from hospital

Opener struck in the ribs while playing for Yorkshire seconds, undergoes precautionary scans

Aaron Finch has been released from hospital following precautionary X-rays after the Australian edged a pull shot into his ribs in his first red-ball match of the British summer.

Finch, batting for Yorkshire's Second XI in their three-day match against Worcestershire's Second XI, was struck early on the first morning of the match.

The injury forced him to retire hurt, however he was able to walk from the field unaided and the match continued at Barnt Green Cricket Club in Lickey, about halfway between Worcester and Birmingham in England's Midlands region.

After reportedly spitting up blood, he was taken to hospital for scans and X-rays, but was later released.

"He left the field unaided and it was decided that he should go to hospital for a scan," Yorkshire's Director of Cricket Martyn Moxon told the club's website.

"We are waiting for results of that scan, but felt it was best for him to return to Leeds. We will monitor the situation and liaise with Cricket Australia.

"Finchy hasn't played a lot of cricket since he came back from his injury, so 'Dizzy' (Jason Gillespie) spoke to him about playing in the Second XI. We thought it would be better spending time in the seconds and building it up again."

Finch was making his third outing for Yorkshire's Second XI this season, but his first against the red ball. He has previously played two T20 matches for the seconds and another three for the first XI in England's domestic Twenty20 competition.

That makes this Finch's sixth match since returning from hamstring surgery after he snapped a tendon playing in the Indian Premier League for the Mumbai Indians in April, the eventual tournament champions.

That hamstring injury was Finch's first major complaint in his professional career, and the opener had been keen to return to the crease as quickly as possible.

"This is the first time I've missed cricket through an injury," Finch told cricket.com.au in May.

"Sitting at home doing nothing and rehabbing is very boring.

"I think there's been times when you've been playing a lot you think to yourself 'Geez I'd just love a break, just a week or two off'. But when you get it though … it took me about a week before I went insane.

"I've just been walking around the house with my bat in my hand wanting to play and wanting to train.

"Luckily I've had 10 good years without any injury so a small setback like this probably isn't the worst thing, especially after such a huge summer and winning the World Cup it's nice to sit back and reflect."

Finch's selection in the second team meant Yorkshire's other Australian signing, Glenn Maxwell, was kept idle this week.

Maxwell played in Yorkshire's last county championship match, scoring 0 and 23no while taking 3-55 in the first innings, but head coach Jason Gillespie did not include the off-spinning allrounder in the XI for the current match against Notts.

With second XI rules allowing only one international in the team, that berth went to Finch.
