Phangiso cleared ahead of World T20

South Africa's left-arm spinner cleared to bowl by independent testing but unlikely to be rushed into final T20 match against Australia in Cape Town tonight

South Africa left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has been cleared to play at the World T20 tournament in India after an independent reassessment of his bowling action found it to be legal, Cricket South Africa (CSA) said on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old failed tests carried out by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on March 1 having been reported by umpires in a domestic 50-over match last month.

Quick Single: Phangiso action found to be illegal

Phangiso was suspended from bowling until his action could be re-tested and has now been cleared to resume his career having worked with South Africa spin-bowling consultant Claude Henderson over the past week.

"It's a huge relief to be cleared and to have my bowling action passed. It's been a tough and challenging few weeks for me," Phangiso said in a CSA statement.

"I'd really like to use the next few days ahead of the (World T20) tournament to gain playing confidence, especially with some of the technical adjustments we have made to my action."

Phangiso is available to play in the series-deciding third Twenty20 international against Australia in Cape Town on Thursday morning (3am AEDT), but is unlikely to be rushed back into the side.

"We are really happy and relieved that Aaron has passed his re-test and he can now ready himself for the big tournament ahead," South Africa coach Russell Domingo said.

"I said at the beginning of the series that we wanted to give everyone in the squad an opportunity to play and while it is tempting to play him (in the third T20), both Aaron and I feel it’s best that he takes a little more time to work on and gain confidence with his new adjustments.

"We have an important few weeks coming up in India so it's going to be important to have him in the right frame of mind both mentally and physically."

South Africa open their World T20 campaign against England on March 18. They will also play Sri Lanka, West Indies and one other nation from the group stage in their Super 10 pool.
