Phangiso's action found to be illegal

Proteas spinner in doubt for World T20 after undergoing testing

South Africa left-arm orthodox spinner Aaron Phangiso has been ruled out of the first two Twenty20 Internationals against Australia while his place in the Proteas’ World T20 squad is in doubt after tests on Tuesday revealed the spinner's bowling action to be illegal.

Phangiso was reported for a suspected illegal action by the match officials in last week’s South Africa domestic one-day cup match between the Highveld Lions and the Warriors.

He underwent testing at the University of Pretoria’s High Performance Centre last Friday, with the assessment revealing that all variations of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted.

Cricket South Africa confirmed Phangiso would not be considered for the first two matches of the KFC T20 International series against Australia starting Friday, but would remain with the squad to work alongside spin-bowling coach, Claude Henderson, and CSA High Performance Manager, Vinnie Barnes, in an effort to remedy his action.

He will undergo a second round of independent tests next Monday, which will determine his availability for the final T20 against Australia on March 9 and whether he will travel to India with the Proteas squad for the ICC World T20.

"The timing of this issue for Aaron and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it," said CSA Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat. "We will work hard to remedy Aaron’s action and have him retested as soon as practically possible.

"We are fortunate to have an ICC accredited Laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible."

Phangiso, 32, has taken 13 wickets in his nine T20I appearances for South Africa.
