Voges to miss six weeks with injury

A serious calf injury has Adam Voges flying back from the UK early, but is expected to return for the domestic Twenty20 season

Australia batsman Adam Voges is flying home from England after a serious calf injury picked up in the County Championship.

Voges was forced to retire hurt while batting for Middlesex in their Division One match against Somerset, and scans have revealed the injury will keep him sidelined for about six weeks.

However, Voges is expected to return to Lord's in late July to link up with Middlesex for the UK's domestic Twenty20 competition, with the target of returning for the club’s match against Hampshire on August 3.

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser said the loss of a former Test player was a huge blow for the county.

"Losing Adam is naturally a blow as he contributes significantly to everything we do, whether it be with bat in hand, catching at slip or his general presence around the team," Fraser said.

"His absence, however, does give opportunities to other players who are desperate to play in the First XI. In the past we have coped well without an overseas player and I expect us to do so now."

Voges' absence has forced Middlesex into a reshuffle of their international signings, with the Western Australian stalwart previously scheduled for a mid-season break to allow the county to add two New Zealanders to their roster.

"Adam was always due to return to Australia for a month after our County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston," Fraser explained.

"This was to allow us to register Brendon McCullum and Tim Southee for the (domestic T20 competition)."

Under this plan, Voges was already scheduled to miss two key matches with McCullum's stint at the county cut short by his Caribbean Premier League commitments.

"Adam has now agreed to come back early at the end of July to be available for these games and all our remaining fixtures," said Fraser.

"By then Brendon will have travelled to the Caribbean to play in the CPL.

"Every indication we have had is that Adam will be fully fit and raring to go by then."
