Voges snares Cook with no-look catch

England captain in terrific tough at Edgbaston until freak catch stops him short

Alastair Cook can count himself just about the unluckiest batsman in Ashes history after he was caught in unbelievable fashion by Adam Voges on day one at Edgbaston.

Voges was fielding at bat-pad when Cook pulled Nathan Lyon's second ball of the day into the midriff of the Australian, who swallowed the ball while ducking for cover in evasive action.

The best short-leg catches ever! (restrictions apply)

The ball lodged in Voges' bread basket to the delight of the tourists and disbelief to the England captain and the 24,000 strong Birmingham crowd.''

"He caught it without ever seeing it," Sky Sports commentator and former England captain David Gower said.

Voges was involved in the first wicket of the day, catching Adam Lyth at first slip off Josh Hazlewood on the third attempt, the West Australian eventually clinging on to the chance to remove the opener for 10.

The 35-year-old was struck in the hip during England's first innings at Lord's in similar circumstances to the Cook catch, leaving the field and not returning for the remainder of the match.

Australia's short-leg fielder Adam Voges was on the receiving end of a fairly vicious blow from England's Ben Stokes (Australia only)

Cook's wicket was vital for the visitors after they were bowled out for 136 inside 37 overs on a rain-affected opening day of the third Test in Birmingham.
