Voges inks new County deal

Western Australia to return to Lord's for the first time since the Ashes, but he'll use the home dressing room next time

Veteran batsman Adam Voges will return to Middlesex for the 2016 County season around his Test commitments for Australia.

Voges joined Middlesex last year expecting to play the entire season, but those plans quickly changed when the Western Australia was picked to make his Test debut against the West Indies in June.

The 36-year-old played only four games for Middlesex before darting off to the Caribbean to begin his career in the Baggy Green.

However, he did return to Lord's but not as a member of the home side – Voges was part of the Australian outfit that crushed England by 405 runs.

Voges will spend the first part of his stint with Middlesex from the beginning of the season until early June when he is expected to travel to Sri Lanka for Australia's three-Test tour.

Following the Test series, the right-hander will return to Lord's from mid-August for the remainder of the season.

"Adam’s return is something we are all delighted with," Middlesex Managing Director of Cricket Angus Fraser said.

"He may not have spent a huge amount of time with us but during the time he has been with us he has made an extremely positive impression.

"Adam continues to show what a high-quality player he is – and we know what a top bloke he is."

Voges will lead the four-day campaign when possible, with James Franklin taking the reins of the one-day team and Dawid Malan captaining the T20 side following Eoin Morgan's decision to stand down as the limited-overs skipper.

In four Division One County Championship matches last year, Voges scored 451 runs at 56.37 with one century and three fifties.

It followed a stunning season for Western Australia in the 2014-15 Sheffield Shield season where he accumulated an astonishing 1,358 runs at 104.46.

That form forced the Australian selectors to pick the then 35-year-old for his Test debut in Dominica, vindicating their faith with an unbeaten 130 in his first innings as a Test batsman.

Despite a rough time against England in the 2015 Ashes, Voges has since gone from strength to strength in the whites, averaging 85.66 in 13 Tests with four hundreds.

Voges will play his next Test on Friday when Australia square off against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
