Zampa honours Hughes on ODI debut

Adam Zampa honoured the memory of Phillip Hughes and did his Twenty20 World Cup aspirations no harm with a credible international debut on Saturday.

Zampa wore No.63 on his back in recognition of the score that Hughes finished on when he was tragically felled at the SCG during a Sheffield Shield match.

Zampa was a friend of Hughes, who inspired him to shift states from NSW to South Australia.

"He used to call me every now and then and say it would be a good move for me," Zampa wrote in an emotive piece on cricket.com.au that marked the one-year anniversary of Hughes' death.

"I probably wouldn't be where I am at the moment if it wasn't for that advice.

"It is still tough for everyone in our squad to talk about ... it's been a tougher than usual week."

Zampa also wears No.63 in the Big Bash League, having changed in December 2014.

"I used to be No.88 and people would ask me 'why did you choose your number' and I never really had a reason," Zampa said at the time.

"I guess this was just a good reason to keep me a little more motivated and thinking of the boys out on the field as well.

"If we are down in the dumps and we are behind in the game, just to have that little signal there."

Zampa grabbed a couple of key scalps in Wellington, playing a major part in Australia's four-wicket win over New Zealand.

The legspinner notably - and poignantly - broke a 63-run stand between Kane Williamson and Grant Elliott that was NZ's biggest partnership.

Zampa, who was handed his maiden cap by former Test captain Allan Border, dismissed top-scorer Williamson for 60 and Elliott for 32.

The fresh-faced tweaker is in the mix for Australia's T20 World Cup squad but faces fierce competition from Cameron Boyce and Nathan Lyon.

It is likely only two of Zampa, Boyce and Lyon will make the cut in the final 15-man squad, which will be announced on Tuesday.
