Zampa confident of spinning into Tests

Leg-spinner faces missing Shield games to play limited-overs internationals but doesn't fear it will harm his Baggy Green ambitions

Adam Zampa says his Baggy Green dream is well within reach even though continued limited-overs selection for Australia will reduce his opportunities to prove himself at Sheffield Shield level.

And the 24-year-old is confident he'll be ready for the opportunity when the Test call comes.

Zampa has looked comfortable in his short international career so far, impressing in the 50-over format and leading the attack as Australia's best bowler at the ICC World T20 in India.

But being a constant for Australia in white-ball cricket would reduce the number of Shield matches Zampa will play each season, denying him more chances to improve on an unflattering first-class record that currently stands at 53 wickets and a bowling average of 50.

However the leg-spinner says further strong performances at international level, even though it's an entirely different format, will only help his Test ambitions.

"I think I've only played about five Shield games in the past 12 months or so," he told cricket.com.au between matches on Australia's Qantas Tour of the West Indies.

"So it is frustrating only because I really enjoy that format. I love playing for South Australia and Adelaide Oval is a great place to play, so all those things added up means it is frustrating.

"But in terms of making it to the next level in that format, I want to keep improving my bowling.

"I think if I look at myself 12 months ago, 18 months ago, or 24 months ago, I think I'm ten times a better bowler than I was then.

"Obviously I need to work out the conditions, bowling in Australia compared to bowling in places like here or India.

"I think the more I can experience that the better I'll be anyway."

Quick single: Unlucky Maxi just needs consistency

Despite his prowess as a limited-overs bowler, Zampa says Test cricket remains his ultimate goal.

Nathan Lyon's status as Australia's No.1 Test spinner is safe, but upcoming Test tours to India (scheduled for February and March next year) and Bangladesh (the postponed 2015 tour could be rescheduled for some time in 2017) means the nation's other spin bowlers – including Sri Lanka Test squad member Steve O'Keefe – will be given a chance.

"If I keep improving the way I think I've been improving, it's definitely something that I think is on the cards," Zampa says.

"Nathan is doing a great job at the moment and I'm very happy where I am playing Twenty20 cricket and one-day cricket.

"I just want to keep improving and hopefully if that opportunity does arrive, I'll definitely be ready for it."

Zampa's exposure to foreign conditions will continue following this one-day international tri-series in the Caribbean, with the leggie to return to Guyana's capital Georgetown – Australia's home for the past week – to play for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League.

International stars like AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn, Shane Watson and Mike Hussey will all feature in this year's CPL, which will run from June 29 until August 7, while Zampa will play alongside Martin Guptill and Chris Lynn at the Warriors.

Quick single: Two day-night Ashes Tests on the cards

And the young leggie will surely relish the chance to return to Guyana's Providence Stadium, a spin-friendly venue where 31 of the 49 wickets to fall in the three tri-series matches were taken by slow bowlers.

"It's obviously another great opportunity to work in these conditions," he said.

"I think the CPL is really improving as a competition ... there's some pretty good international stars.

"To have the opportunity to play through the winter, not that it's a bad thing (to have a break), but I'm not the kind of guy who likes to be stuck indoors or running around a park.

"So (I can) continue to play cricket and then hopefully go into the Sri Lanka tour (for the limited overs matches in August and September) as well, to keep bowling overs in foreign conditions."
