Cricket sympathises with Phil Walsh murder

Cricket Australia, national men's team coach Darren Lehmann and cricketers send their best wishes and thoughts to AFL community

Australia's cricketers and Cricket Australia have joined the tributes and reacted with shock at the murder of Adelaide Crows head coach Phil Walsh.

Walsh was in the midst of his first year as coach of the Australian Rules Football club, which calls South Australia home.

The news shocked Australia's Ashes team camp in England where the players were at the team hotel after a long day in the field in Essex, with Adelaide native Darren Lehmann - who is a Crows Club Ambassador - and captain Michael Clarke leading the tributes.

"My thoughts are with Phil's family, the Adelaide Crows Football Club and all of the AFL community at this extremely tough time," Lehmann said.

"Phil contributed a huge amount to the AFL in his lifetime and it was clear he was doing great things at the Crows. It's just terrible what has happened and I know he will be sorely missed by all he knew and loved him."

Ryan Harris, who spent a considerable part of his early career in South Australia, also joined the tributes from Chelmsford, as did fellow fast bowler Peter Siddle.

Cricket Australia sent their condolences as well via Twitter, and also in a short statement.

"On behalf of the Australian cricket community, Cricket Australia extends its deepest sympathies to the Walsh family, the Adelaide Football Club and the wider Australian football community at this incredibly sad time," said Cricket Australia this morning.

A statement from South Australia police confirmed AFL coach Walsh was murdered at his Somerton Park home in the early hours of this morning.

Walsh's son has been charged with the murder of his father.

The news was quick to filter through to Australian cricketers at home and abroad.
