Strikers eyeing Big Bash atonement

Wicketkeeper says the disappointment of last summer will drive the Strikers in BBL|05

Adelaide Strikers wicketkeeper Tim Ludeman says his side is determined to atone for a disappointing end to last year's Big Bash League campaign.

The Strikers burst out of the blocks to finish top of the ladder in the group stages but fell short in the semi-finals.

Ludeman says the Strikers, led by coach Jason Gillespie, have trained through an Adelaide heatwave as they look to compete for a maiden title.

"It's been a good few days since 'Dizzy' got here and everyone's training hard," he said on Wednesday.

"Making the semis last year was a big feat for the Strikers and hopefully we can go one better this year."

The Strikers have bolstered their batting lineup with the signing of former Sri Lankan Test captain Mahela Jayawardene.

Jayawardene, 38, played 149 Tests during a glittering career, scoring 11,814 runs at an average of 49.84.

Quick single: Ferguson out for summer with torn ACL

He replaces West Indian Kieron Pollard, ruled out with a knee injury.

"Everyone knows the class of Mahela," Ludeman said.

"He's such a likeable character, and the knowledge that he'll pass on to the younger guys will be excellent for us moving forward.

"He does play the spin very well so hopefully we can steal some of those tips from him before he leaves."

The Strikers will open their BBL season on Friday against the Melbourne Stars at Adelaide Oval.

Ludeman smashed the fastest ever BBL half-century last time the two sides faced off, hitting 50 off 18 balls on his way to an unbeaten 92.

Quick single: 'Hurt' Hussey ready to rumble

The diminutive batsman laughed when asked if he would be aiming for a repeat performance.

"I hope so," he said.

"It'd be nice to recapture some of that form but I suppose we'll find out on Friday night."
