Starc a 'different animal': Donald

Pace great looking forward to working with Australia's speedsters in Sri Lanka

Having been born and raised in South Africa where the 'Big Five' rule the plains, Allan Donald knows when he has seen a beast.

After running his eye over Australia's Test pace attack as its interim bowling coach, Donald has identified a "different animal" in speedster Mitchell Starc.

"I've worked with Mitch over here at (Indian Premier League franchise) RCB and I always judge people on how they lead with the ball," Donald told cricket.com.au.

"He's a very highly skilled individual and he showed that in the (2015) World Cup.

"He's just a different animal with the ball in his hand.

"New ball or old ball he's ferocious and bowls 150 clicks with the new ball.

"And we've seen what he's done over here with RCB in the Twenty20s when he bowls at the death – he's hard to stop."

It's been a prolific 18 months for Starc, who has emerged from the shadows of Mitchell Johnson to be crowned Australia's Test spearhead.

The left-armer was almost unstoppable in the 2015 World Cup, taking 22 wickets at 10.18 and delivering the knockout blow in the first over against New Zealand in the victorious final at the MCG.

He played all five Ashes Tests last winter and was Australia's leading wicket-taker in the series with 20 English wickets.

When he returned home the 26-year-old was recorded at 160.4kph on the speed gun in the Perth Test last November before finally succumbing to a foot injury in the following day-night Test in Adelaide.

The quick is set to return to the Australian line-up on a limited-overs tour of the Caribbean in June.

while While Donald is excited to work with Starc in Sri Lanka on his maiden mission as Australia's interim bowling coach, he's also keen to identify other leaders in the Fast Bowling Cartel.

"You see with (James) Pattinson and Starc and (Josh) Hazlewood, I've seen them a lot on TV," Donald said.

"I know Mitchell as an individual and leader with the ball, but the other guys I still have to tap into their psyche and philosophy and get to know them a little bit better.

"They love giving you a crack and they don't back away from a good fight.

"For me it's how many leaders we can create within a bowling group has always been key."
