Police summon India cricketer Mishra

Amit Mishra has been given seven days to report to police over alleged assault

Police have summoned Indian cricketer Amit Mishra over allegations he assaulted a woman filmmaker in a hotel room in Bangalore.

The woman, identified by police as Vandana, accused the 32-year-old right-arm spinner of assaulting her with a kettle at a luxury hotel on September 25.

Mishra is a member of the India squad to play the two remaining one-day internationals against South Africa this month, and the first two Tests against South Africa next month.

He was in Bengaluru as a part of a preparatory camp for the South Africa series.

"We have filed a first information report against Mishra on the basis of the complaint filed on September 27 and issued a notice asking him to appear before our investigating officer within a week," Bangalore deputy police commissioner Sandeep Patil told reporters on Tuesday.

Patil said they had sent a copy of the summons to the Indian cricket board, as the accused was attending a camp organised by the board in the city when the alleged incident happened.

The Mumbai-based film producer said in her complaint she had known the cricketer for three years and had gone to meet him at the hotel when he allegedly assaulted her.

Mishra picked up three wickets at 28.33 in the two ODIs he's played and has been India's standout performer with the ball.

If he misses the next game, which will be played in Chennai on Thursday, India will be left with middle-order batsman Ambati Rayudu, medium-pacer Sreenath Aravind, or all-rounders Gurkeerat Mann and Stuart Binny to choose as a replacement.

India, who are 2-1 down in the series, are already without key spinner Ravichandran Ashwin who suffered a side injury in the first ODI and has was later ruled out of the remainder of the series.

Harbhajan was named as a cover for Ashwin. It remains to be seen if the selectors will bring in someone for Mishra as well.
